Istryxian

Dual-natured humanoid lineage with shared ancestral memory and a second perceptual sense that reads emotional and Rift-resonant frequencies. Branches into three distinct sublineages: D'horvakk, Zaelyth, and Keth'rassa.

Features

  • Dual-Form Perception

Istryxian sensoria perceive both the world's physical surface and a layered emotional-resonance field laid over it. You can sense, within 30 ft, the broad emotional state (calm, fearful, hostile, deceptive, in pain) of any creature whose mind operates on a sapient or near-sapient frequency. You do not read specific thoughts; you read the weather of a mind. Constructs, undead, and minds heavily warded against intrusion register as flat or absent. This sense functions through cover and in darkness but is blocked by lead, Aurelian void-shielding, and similar dense materials.

  • Ancestral Memory-Pool

All Istryxians inherit fragments of a shared cultural memory — a slow-moving collective archive that surfaces relevant knowledge under pressure. Once per long rest, when you make an Intelligence (History, Lore, or Investigation) check related to Istryxian history, ancestry, regional folklore, or any matter your line plausibly witnessed, you can draw on the memory-pool: you treat the result as if you had rolled a 15, then add your modifiers. The GM may also volunteer, unprompted, a fragment of cultural memory if a scene's relevance to your lineage is high (this is a roleplay hook, not a mechanical guarantee).

  • Resonance-Reading

You can sense the presence and rough flavor of active Rift energy within 60 ft of you — the way a person attuned to musical pitch can hear that a chord is off without naming the notes. You can distinguish channeled Rift effects from latent ambient Rift, and you can identify (without identifying the specific channel) the broad School of an active effect — Sun, Earth, Ether, etc. You cannot identify exact channels, channeled creatures, or hidden focus items by this sense alone, but it provides a powerful supporting input for Investigation and Riftcraft checks the GM is adjudicating.

  • Shared Tongue

You can read, write, and speak Istryx, the layered tonal language common to all three sublineages. Istryx is partially conveyed through dual-vocalization (a primary tone and a sub-vocal harmonic), and is essentially impossible for non-Istryxians to fully replicate without years of training. You can also speak one of Common or the regional language of your sublineage's territory.

Istryx, Common

Lifespan

Mature at 22 · Typical max 220 years

Istryxians age in two phases: a near-human early adulthood, then a long, slow elder phase during which the memory-pool becomes more accessible. Elder Istryxians often serve as cultural archivists across all three sublineages.
