Identity
Whisper Bards are the worst-kept secret of the Bardic profession: every College disavows them in writing, every College harbors at least three of them in practice. The Aurelion court keeps them as confessors and as poisoners — sometimes the same person, sometimes the same week. The Black Meridian Syndicate keeps them as fixers. The Echelon Corporation calls them PR consultants. A Whisper Bard's channeling rides on the unsaid thing — the secret, the fear named at last, the borrowed face. They are immensely useful and almost no one trusts them, including their own colleges of origin.
Features
- L3 Psychic Blades
When you hit a creature with a weapon attack, you can expend one use of Bardic Inspiration to roll your Bardic Inspiration die and deal additional psychic damage equal to the die roll plus your CHA modifier. You declare the use of Psychic Blades after the attack hits but before damage is rolled. The target does not gain the Bardic Inspiration die — the die is consumed by the strike. A target struck by Psychic Blades hears, briefly, a single sentence of its own deepest insecurity or shame whispered in its own voice; this carries no separate mechanical effect, but is part of the feature's signature. You may use Psychic Blades a number of times per long rest equal to your Bardic Inspiration uses (drawn from the same pool). The damage die size is your current Bardic Inspiration die.
- L7 Mantle of Whispers
When a humanoid dies within 30 ft of you, you may use your reaction to capture a Mantle of Whispers — a brief impression of the deceased's surface identity (voice, mannerisms, recent memories of the last hour, the cadence of their speech, the routine of their face). You can carry one Mantle at a time; capturing a new one releases the previous. As an action, you may don your Mantle to assume the captured individual's identity. While wearing the Mantle, you appear, sound, and broadly act like the captured individual to any observer; you can answer surface questions about their last hour with full accuracy, and other questions plausibly enough to deceive casual scrutiny. You can drop the Mantle as a free action at any time. The Mantle lasts up to 1 hour total of worn time per capture (cumulative across multiple donnings). The Mantle does not deceive: close family or intimate associates of the captured individual on careful inspection (Insight check at DC 8 + your proficiency + your CHA modifier, advantage if they have known the individual for a year or more), magical truth-detection of caster level 5 or higher, biometric scanners reading subdermal or genetic markers, or true-sight. It does deceive: voice-print analysis at standard confidence levels, video matching at standard confidence levels, casual to moderate verbal interrogation, and most security systems below Tier IV.
- L11 Shadow Lore
You know the things people do not say aloud, and you use them. As an action, choose one creature within 30 ft that can hear and understand you. Whisper to it (in any language you share, or through any communication channel you can confirm) a piece of dark knowledge — true or fabricated — that pertains specifically to the target. The target makes a Wisdom save against your channel save DC; on a failure, it is Frightened of you for 1 hour, and treats you as a charmed friend for the duration of the fright (it will not attack you and will reluctantly cooperate with your social requests, within the limit of the Charmed condition's protections against direct harm to self or close associates). The whisper must be plausible to the target — fabrications must be at least adjacent to a real fear or guilt the target holds. The GM adjudicates plausibility. A failed plausibility imposes advantage on the target's save. The target does not remember the specific whispered content after the effect ends, but knows it was whispered something it found terrifying. The effect ends if you attack the target, if the target is harmed by you or an ally, or after 1 hour. You may use Shadow Lore a number of times per long rest equal to your CHA modifier (minimum 1).
- L15 Eye-Spies
You have spun a network of small informants — gossip-traders in tavern kitchens, news-aggregator hobbyists on Echelon nets, low-level Halcyion vergers who owe you a song, a dozen others. The network maintains itself between adventures; you do not pay it, but you owe it courtesies (a song, a favor, the occasional protection). While in any settlement of 5,000 inhabitants or more, or with access to any open communications network, you may invoke Eye-Spies once per long rest. State a single question (one specific person's recent whereabouts within the last week; the current location of a known object; the answer to a specific yes-or-no rumor about a public figure; a piece of regionally circulating gossip about an ongoing event). After 1d6 hours, the network returns an answer: accurate, partially accurate, or 'no one knows yet,' as the GM rules. The Eye-Spies cannot find what is genuinely unknown to mortal informants, cannot answer questions requiring magical divination, and cannot reliably penetrate Tier IV+ security or active counter-intelligence cover. The network may also surface unsolicited gossip when narratively useful: the GM may inform you, between sessions or at the start of a session, that an Eye-Spy contact has brought you something relevant.
- L18 Whisper-Queen Coronet Capstone
You have walked the path of the soft voice to its conclusion. Choose one of the following permanent benefits at the moment you take this feature; the choice cannot be changed. • **The Coronet of Names.** You may invoke any captured Mantle of Whispers ever taken (you must have personally captured it), not only the most recent. You retain up to ten Mantles in active memory; older Mantles fade. While wearing a Mantle, the duration limit is removed. • **The Coronet of Silence.** Once per long rest, as an action, you may speak a single sentence at a creature within 60 ft. If the sentence is a true and pointed accusation regarding the target, the target makes a Charisma save against your channel save DC at disadvantage; on a failure, the target's voice fails — the target cannot speak above a whisper, cannot vocalize channels, cannot give commands, cannot summon aid by voice — for 24 hours. A successful Greater Restoration, Remove Curse, or equivalent ends the effect early. • **The Coronet of Confession.** Once per long rest, you may force a creature within 30 ft that can hear and understand you to make a Wisdom save against your channel save DC. On a failure, the target speaks aloud, truthfully, one secret of moderate consequence that it has been keeping from those within earshot. The target is aware of having done so afterward, but cannot prevent it once the save is failed. This feature does not extract battle-critical or system-protected information from the unwilling (Tier IV+ secrets, classified state intelligence, magically warded oaths); it extracts personal-shame-grade secrets reliably.
