Kroot

Avian-reptilian predator-hunters from frontier worlds, marked by quill-feathered crests, beaked faces, and a unique digestive biology that briefly imprints minor traits from consumed prey.

core medium Walk · 30 ft Free-placement abilities

Features

  • Hunter's Diet

Your physiology temporarily adapts to the flesh you consume. Once per long rest, when you take a short rest during which you consume a significant portion of a slain creature (no smaller than Small size), you may choose to absorb a single minor genetic trait for 24 hours. Choose one: a climb speed of 20 ft (consumed prey was a climbing predator), darkvision out to 60 ft (consumed prey was nocturnal), or a +1 bonus to Strength-based attack and damage rolls (consumed prey was an apex bruiser). You can hold only one trait at a time; selecting a new one ends the previous trait.

  • Avian Sight

Your eyes are predator-sharp at distance. You have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight at distances of 100 ft or greater. You can identify discrete shapes (a sigil, a face, a weapon) at twice the distance other humanoids of similar training can.

  • Pack Bond

You read the body language of fellow predators with practiced ease. You have advantage on Wisdom (Animal Handling) checks made with other kroot kin or with non-sapient predators trained to hunt. Trained predator companions you direct do not require an action to maintain command.

  • Hunt-Tongue

You can read, write, and speak Kroothic (a rasping, click-paced trade cant) and Common.

Languages

Kroothic, Common

Lifespan

Mature at 12 · Typical max 80 years

Kroot mature quickly under pressure of hunt-culture and reach adulthood by their early teens; eight decades is a long life for a kroot, and most who reach it have stepped back from active hunting.
